The Asphalt series delivers pure arcade racing fun for mobile devices, and Asphalt 5 ups the ante.

Asphalt 5 is all about arcade racing in its purest form, and it borrows elements from popular PC and console racers like Burnout and Ridge Racer. This is not a simulation in any way. It does, however, boast a consistent physics model. That means that while the physics model isn’t real-world-like, it is learnable, and with experience, you’ll bring racing skills even to tracks you’re driving for the first time.

Asphalt 5 looks amazing. It looked good upon launch, and it looks good even now after a number of other Asphalt sequels have continued to impress us. The game provides many gorgeous tracks. Each of these are fun, unique and set within an iconic world locale, such as Las Vegas or Rio de Janiero.

The element that brings the game together and serves as a carrot is the career mode. You’ll race in many different types of events, including circuits and point-to-point races. Each time you win, you’ll earn cash. The better you perform, the more you earn. Use that cash to purchase and upgrade cars. You’ll begin with a Mini Cooper S but soon be driving Ferraris, Lamborghinis and more.

The default controls are quite good too, and cars feel different. The developers want you to use tilt steering, and if your device supports it, those controls let you turn, accelerate and decelerate without ever letting go of each side of the device. It takes a little getting used to, but once you do, you’ll be amazed at the precision. If you have to use the on-screen controls, the game is unfortunately neither as precise nor as fun.

This download is a trial version. It includes only a small selection of modes and vehicles. If you want to upgrade to the full edition, then you have to pay. Know that if you love arcade racers, we certainly think the app is worth the paid upgrade. Nevertheless, the game also has microtransactions. While you can certainly ignore these in single-player, they do affect the multiplayer environment.
